SPAL vs Genoa: Prediction

While it is still relatively early in the season, SPAL seems to be facing yet another relegation contender following their matches with Udinese and Sampdoria just before the international break.

Two wins, two draws and staggering eight defeats places them at second-to-last place in the Serie A standings, but only one point away from first team above the line and, coincidentally, their next rival, Genoa.

Semplici’s men have a chance to kill two birds with one stone, to put an end to their five-game winless streak and get out of the relegation zone in front of their own crowd. There are amends to be made, especially by Petagna, who missed an extra time penalty vs Zebrette.

Cionek and Tomovic are suspended; Fares, D’Alessandro and Strefezza out with injuries.

Genoa are one of the most unpredictable teams in the league, especially since the arrival of their newest manager, Thiago Motta. You just don’t know which Genoa side will show up, one that outplayed Brescia or the one that got smacked by Udinese at Luigi Ferraris.

Currently sitting at 17th place with 9 points, tied with their local rivals Sampdoria in the relegation zone, Il Grifone are looking forward to this game as a start of a somewhat more favorable patch of games in which they’re hoping to start picking up points regularly.

Game against Napoli was a good start, as they were evenly matched with the Azzurri at Stadio San Paolo.

Sturaro, Saponara and Kouame are injured. Apart from them, everyone else is available for selection.

SPAL have win-draw-loss record of 2-1-3 at Stadio Paolo Mazza. Gli Spallini are averaging 1.17 goals per game at this ground, whilst conceding 1.50 per tie. But comparing to the beginning of the season, it seems like they’ve tightened their defence after defeat against Parma. Two goals conceded in the last three games, one in a stalemate against Napoli and one in that truly unlucky defeat vs Sampdoria.

Il Grifone are, with an exception of SPAL, the worst away team in the league. In six games, they’ve picked up only 2 points, averaging 1 goal per game. Defensively, no away team has conceded more goals than Genoa. They’re allowing an abysmal 2.83 goals per game, which is almost a goal per game more comparing to 18/19. season.

It’s always tricky doing a prediction after the international break but from everything I’ve seen, I’m willing to back SPAL, although with a safety net. Draw-no-bet for me.

Also, I’d take my chances on Andrea Petagna to score anytime. The former Italian international scored all of his goals this season on home turf and against defense like the one Genoa has, he’s bound to get into scoresheets again.
