SPAL vs Atalanta: Preview and Predictions

SPAL vs Atalanta-Italian Serie A-Predictions 7th April 2018

SPAL vs Atalanta
Italian Serie A.
Date: Saturday, 7 April 2018
Kick-Off: 17:00 UK,
Venue: Stadio Paolo Mazza (Ferrara).

Atalanta were beaten by Sampdoria on Tuesday which has put a massive dent in their Europa League ambitions. Nonetheless, La Dea have a great chance to turn things around as they take on SPAL, who are only two points clear of the drop with less than two months remaining in the season.

The hosts are in 17th spot and are coming into this game unbeaten in their last five games. They will be desperate to grind out another point after earning three straight draws which will further boost their chances at achieving safety.

Atalanta did suffer a setback recently but have been largely solid on the road. Their last away fixture saw them crush Hellas Verona 5-0 and they have won six of their last eight away games, with their only loss as of late being against Juventus in Turin.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s men face a tough battle for a Europa League spot, especially with Fiorentina on a kick lately and Sampdoria relying on their home form to see them over the line. Still, the reverse fixture did end as a one-all draw earlier this season, and they did stumble to a surprise stalemate against Crotone. Furthermore, SPAL did manage to halt Juventus’s winning streak by parking the bus to max effect and secured a scoreless draw against the Bianconeri.

With that in mind, this game could actually be a lot tougher for Atalanta than it seems, and the visitors will need to be on top of their game in order to make sure they keep themselves in the running for a Europa League berth.

SPAL vs Atalanta: Head-to-head

The lone meeting between Spal and Atalanta happened earlier this season. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.

SPAL vs Atalanta: Prediction

SPAL have really struggled against teams in the top half of the table, and they have actually failed to defeat any team in the top half at their home stadium. That being said they did hold Juventus not just to a draw, but to a scoreless one by putting all men behind the ball.

It will be interesting to see if they adopt the same approach here or try to venture forward, but this will be a game that could potentially cause Atalanta some more problems than expected if they don’t have their game plan right.
