SPAL vs Atalanta
2018/19 Italian Serie A.
Date: Monday 17 September 2018
Kick-Off: 19:30 UK,
Venue: Stadio Paolo Mazza (Ferrara).
SPAL are due to open their newly updated stadium this week, and certainly the hosts will aim to celebrate this with a win over Atalanta on Monday evening. However, the visitors come into this game having experienced a disappointing result against Cagliari before the international hiatus and having updated their squad to compete on multiple fronts, La Dea certainly will look to spoil the hosts’ party.
Unfortunately, Atalanta’s hopes for competing in the Europa League this season came to a grinding halt as they failed to find a way past Copenhagen during the playoffs, and so it’s now back to the drawing board. The objective obviously this term for the Bergamo-based outfit will be to again secure a European football spot, but that could be easier said than done for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side.
However, Atalanta have struggled as of late, especially in their travels. La Dea had a 3-1 lead against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico only to throw that away and had to settle for a 3-3 draw in a game that they really should have won. And overall, they have won just twice at SPAL’s home ground.
If one were to combine that with the fact that SPAL have lost just one of their last eight at home and overall just three of their last 16, Atalanta could find things a lot tougher than expected here.
Interestingly enough, neither Leonardo Semplici nor Gasperini have managed to get the better of each other as a manager in two prior meetings. So far, it’s been two meetings and two draws for the duo. Will either be able to get the better of the other on Monday evening?

SPAL vs Atalanta: Prediction
Seven of the last nine meetings across all competitions between SPAL and Atalanta have ended as 1-1 draws, and Atalanta have struggled in their travels as of late. Furthermore, the fact that SPAL have lost just one of their last eight at home and three of their last 16 games overall is quite impressive.
They will be confident of getting a result here as they put in a good fight to avoid the drop last term. Atalanta are now four games overall without a win and the way they threw away a 3-1 advantage against Roma was not impressive. The visitors should be confident of getting at least a point here.
