Southampton vs Manchester City
England – Premier League
Date: Saturday, 19 December 2020
Kick-off at 15:00 UK/ 16:00 CET
Venue: St. Mary’s Stadium.
The Saints have been uncharacteristically good this season, and are placed third in the table at the moment.
Only Liverpool, and Chelsea have scored more goals than them this campaign, and with the second-placed Tottenham locking horns with the fourth-placed Leicester this weekend, it’s a great opportunity for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men to strengthen their hold on the podium.
However, they will have to take on the disgruntled and desperate Manchester City in order to do that. Pep Guardiola seems to be going through a barren patch. The former champions of the competition are currently struggling to get into the top-six of the table.
Still, in terms of quality and experience, the Citizens are far ahead than that of the Saints.
Moreover, the current slump of the 2018-19 champions could be rectified with a huge performance this Saturday, and do note that Pep’s men have a great h2h record against this opponent over the years.
Count on Manchester City to showcase their class and deliver a masterful game this weekend at the St. Mary’s Stadium.
Southampton vs Manchester City: Head-to-head (h2h)
- Guardiola’s men had won seven of the previous eight overall fixtures.
- They had scored two or more goals in 11 of the preceding 14 clashes.
- At this venue, the guests had won three of the past four encounters.
- Since 2002, the hosts have won just thrice at this stadium, and since 1990, just four times.
Southampton vs Manchester City: Prediction
Hasenhuttl’s men were held to a 1-1 draw the last match-day on the road, by Arsenal. In the meantime, the Citizens were held to a 1-1 draw at home by West Brom.
Going on, despite all their exploits, the Saints have failed to perform well against some of the best teams in the competition. They were held to draws by Arsenal, and Wolves, and were defeated by the Red Devils in the last five game weeks.
However, Guardiola’s men were unbeaten in 18 of their last 20 overall match-ups, and the two losses during the stretch had come against Leicester, and Tottenham.
On top of that, Pep’s men also have a great h2h record against this rival over the past several decades.
As such, expect Manchester City to have a great shot at posting the three points on the board.
Moving on, note that Hasenhuttl’s men have scored two or more goals in their past six straight home appearances, and they have failed to score at home only once since July.
In addition, the Citizens are under-performing at the moment, and are placed eighth in the table, while their opposite number are placed third in the standings.
For the reasons, expect Southampton to score at least once this weekend.
