South Africa vs Senegal
World Cup Qualifiers – Africa
Date: Friday, 10th November 2017
Kick-off at 17:00 UK/ 18:00 CET
Venue: Peter Mokaba Stadium (Polokwane).
The grandest of stands is on show this Saturday, when South Africa hosts a reinforced Senegal side. After the controversy of poor officiating and Senegal’s pain at partisan officiating, the Lions of Teranga have the rare chance to redeem themselves and qualify for Russia 2016.
Senegal come into this match atop their group and with an excellent chance to qualify for the world cup. The West Africans lead Burkina Faso in second by two points (and a game in hand), and would virtually seal a place in Russia with a win at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
The Bafana Bafana, the dramatic winners of the canceled fixture, approach Saturday’s game free of fitness issues. Indeed, Coach Stuart Baxter is expected to field his strongest team that outclassed Burkina Faso 3-1 during the November internationals.
While the visitors eye a place in Russia next summer, the hosts have very little to play for other than professional pride. That does not make this match a foregone contest, and Cisse’s men will surely be made to work for the spoils (and Russia) on Saturday.
On the contrary, Senegal visit Polokwane at the right moment, a least in terms of fitness concerns. The West African giants were recently strengthened by the return of Liverpool danger-man Sadio Mane. This is bad news for South Africa, who will have to deal with the pace of both Mane and Monaco new boy Keita Balde on both wings.
South Africa vs Senegal: Head-to-head
The Lions of Teranga boast a vastly superior head-to-head compared to their hosts. The West Africans are unbeaten in the 3 recent meetings between Saturday’s opponents, winning all three without conceding.
However, the hosts are on a hot streak in front of goal, hitting a blank in just one of their previous eight games. Still, Bafana Bafana has won just once in their last four fixtures, while the group leaders are unbeaten (2 wins, draws apiece) over the same period.
South Africa vs Senegal: Predictions
With Russia in sight and the hosts rooted to the foot of the table, Senegal are 2.50 favorites with Williamhill to secure their place in Russia next year with a win on Saturday.
Despite the recent encounters between these sides producing goals aplenty, and under 2.5 is a bargain offer at 1.53 while odds of 1.72 on one or both not finding the net are generous.
