Scotland vs Slovenia: Preview and Prediction

Scotland vs Slovenia-Match Preview-26th March 2017

Scotland vs Slovenia
2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Europe, Group F.
Date: Sunday, 26th March 2017
Kick off at 19:45 UK / 20:45 CET
Venue: Hampden Park (Glasgow).

Scotland Football team are going through a tough phase after a poor start to the qualification campaign. Despite picking up a comfortable win against Malta as expected in the opening group game, Scotland were denied wins in the next three matches.

The 1-1 draw against Lithuania must be seen as 2 points dropped, while back-to-back defeats against Slovakia and England shows that this team has a serious problem in playing at the highest level.

Slovenia on the other hand, are unbeaten in their four matches. They were not convincing as they would want to be. But head-coach Srecko Katanec will be happy to be sitting 2 point behind England at the top of the group.

They had to fend off tough challenge from Lithuania in the group opener, but cancelled out a 2-goal deficit to earn a vital point. It was again a late goal that helped them to see-off a strong Slovakia before holding England to a goal-less draw. They were supposed to thrash Malta in the very next match, but managed to score just one goal.

It is quite clear that Slovenia have troubles scoring goals. If you look at the team sheet, the two forwards Roman Bezjak and Robert Beric have scored just twice in 27 matches between them.

Scotland vs Slovenia: Head-to-head

Scotland have an unbeaten record against Slovenia with a win and 2 draws in the three matches played so far. The last competitive meeting has to be dated back to 2005 for the World Cup qualifiers where Scotland earned a 0-0 draw at home before thrashing Slovenia 3-0 in the away leg. The only other meeting was in a friendly in 2012, the teams share the spoils in a match that ended 1-1.

Scotland vs Slovenia: Prediction

Scotland’s 1-1 draw against Canada in a friendly in the mid-week raise questions to this team’s ability to perform in high intensity games. The pressure is high on head-coach Gordon Strachan after a poor start to the qualifiers. This could get worse if the Scots fail to pick three points on Sunday evening.

Slovenia, despite their unbeaten start to the campaign, hardly looked convincing in the four matches so far. They do have problems finding goals, but the strong defense and midfield is complementing well enough to bag crucial points.

This is expected to be a cagey affair with goals coming at a premium. Therefore, our main pick will be under 2.5 goals. Meanwhile, brave punters can go for a half-time correct score of 0-0, priced at 2.38 with Unibet.
