Scotland vs Cyprus
Date: Saturday, 8 June 2019
Kick-Off at 19:45 UK / 20:45 CET
Venue: Hampden Park (Glasgow).
Scotland slipped up heavily in the first round of the new qualifying campaign. They fell 3-0 away at Kazakhstan, a defeat which seriously halted their push for the top-two finish in Group I even though there are eight games left to play.
The team did rebound with a 0-2 victory away at underdogs San Marino, but it counted for little for Alex McLeish who was fired right away.
Steve Clarke took charge of the hot seat and Saturday’s home tie against Cyprus will actually see the former Kilmarnock manager make his official debut.
He called up his Killie striker Eamonn Brophy who earned his first national team cap. Will the forward make the starting line-up here?
A three-pointer is an imperative for the hosts, but we don’t quite see them as enormous favourites as the odds may suggest.
Scotland vs Cyprus: Head-to-head
The head to head tradition completely fancies Scotland here.
The hosts won each of five meetings with Cyprus so far.
The streak includes a 1-2 victory in a friendly played back in November 2011.
Scotland vs Cyprus: Prediction
Scotland enjoyed a fine UEFA Nations League campaign as they topped the group with Israel and Albania with three wins in four games. They scored an impressive 10-goal tally along the way.
Nonetheless, the tally of two goals in two matches against the likes of Kazakhstan and San Marino is rather disappointing and there are no doubts the hosts will be highly motivated to get their campaign up and running and boost up the confidence with a victory here.
Cyprus had a subpar run in their respective Nations League group. They demolished San Marino 5-0 at the start of the qualifying campaign, but went on to lose 0-2 to favourites Belgium.
Can they grab a breakthrough by taking advantage of the poor momentum in the Scottish squad?
The value is with the visitors who are 1.53 not to lose by two or more goals difference.
