Sassuolo vs Udinese
2016/17 Italian Serie A.
Date: Sunday, 25 September 2016
Kick-Off: 14:00 UK,
Venue: Mapei Stadium (Reggio Emilia).
An injury hit Sassuolo will hope to start their week off with a win as they welcome a complex Udinese side to Mapei Stadium this Sunday.
Eusebio Di Franesco is still without the services of key man Domenico Berardi, but the Neroverdi have performed admirably in his absence. Nonetheless, they are now featuring on multiple fronts – including the Europa League – meaning that effective man-management and squad rotation are even more vital for them this term. That being said, they are still unbeaten at home in all competitions so far (if one excludes their 2-1 win over Pescara converted to a 3-0 loss on a technicality).
In addition, they’ve kept things tight at the back whilst on home turf. Pescara have been the only side to score against them, but having lost to Chievo on matchday five, Sassuolo will want to head into their second Europa League group stage game on a winning note.
Udinese, meanwhile, have been quite decent so far, but the Zebrette have not been the same side that once mixed it up with the “big boys” for quite some time. The eventual decline and retirement of Antonio Di Natale has left a huge hole up front, although Duvan Zapata has scored in back-to-back games and will be hoping to continue staking his claim for a spot in the starting XI.
One point from two games isn’t exactly promising for Udinese, but they have been an unknown factor so far this term, so it’s hard to predict what one will get from the Zebrette in this tie.
Sassuolo vs Udinese Head-to-head statistics
- Udinese have won 10 out of their last 20 away games against teams ranked lower than them in the table.
- Sassuolo have only won six out of their last 20 home games against teams ranked higher than them (seven draws, seven losses)
- The Neroverdi have scored at least two goals in their past three home games.
- The Zebrette have lost just once to Sassuolo in their last six meetings (three draws, two losses).
- Only one out of those meetings saw more than 2.5 goals.
Sassuolo vs Udinese: Prediction
Sassuolo, of course, would be higher in the table had they not been docked three points. Nonetheless, the Neroverdi have proven to be a tough side at home, and indeed it is quite impressive they have only managed to concede once across all competitions this season. That includes their two play-off ties before booking their spot in the Europa League group stage.
But with increased competitions comes increased responsibilities, and Di Francesco surely will have their Europa League tie on his mind heading into this game. Udinese have done well historically in this fixture, but goals have tended to be at a premium. The last two meetings ended as draws, and as noted before, only one out of their last six meetings ended with over 2.5 goals. Thus, this match will likely follow in the same vein, with Udinese likely to pick up at least a point on Sunday.
