Sassuolo vs Roma
2017/18 Italian Serie A.
Date: Sunday, 20 May 2018
Kick-Off: 19:45 UK,
Venue: MAPEI Stadium (Reggio Emilia).
Given that Sassuolo managed to throw a monkey wrench in Inter’s plans last weekend, Roma’s Champions League spot is now secure. Eusebio Di Francesco will hope to cap off what has been an excellent debut season in Italy’s capital by beating his former side on Sunday.
Di Francesco did excellently in his first ever Champions League campaign by guiding the Lupi all the way to the semi-finals. No one expected Roma to get that far. For starters, they had a really tough group, alongside Chelsea and Atletico Madrid, and they managed to top that quartet. Pitted against Barcelona, the press, especially those based in Catalonia – wrote them off even before they kicked a ball, but they handled themselves quite well to book a semi-finals clash with Liverpool, and were just a goal away from making it to the finals.
They pushed the Reds all the way in an entertaining clash from start to finish and certainly will be hoping to do as well next term to prove they’re no one hit wonder. Then again, one shouldn’t be surprised, as Di Francesco is the same man who helped Sassuolo navigate their way through Serie A when they burst onto the scene in 2013 and helped guide them into the Europa League.
Since he left, Sassuolo have had a difficult time this term. They have been worse at home than on the road and have scored just 11 times on home turf. Overall, they’re the lowest scoring side in the league and while they are set to remain afloat, they have lost four of their last six games here against teams in the European spots.
However, Sassuolo have been picking up points and doing what they need to do to get by – including beating Inter recently as their away form has been quite decent. In addition, they’ve lost just one of their last five and are comfortably secure in mid-table, so have accomplished what they need to do for the current campaign.

Sassuolo vs Roma: Prediction
Roma have been quite impressive all term. Although Sassuolo’s home form isn’t the best, they do come into this game having beaten Inter and are unbeaten in four of their last five. They’re safe from relegation, so come into this fixture free from pressure. Roma will certainly want to wrap things up with a win to stay clear of Lazio and Sassuolo, on cruise control, aren’t likely to put up much up of a fight, either.
