San Lorenzo and Atletico Mineiro are about to lock horns in the most interesting tie of the first round in Copa Sudamericana. Estadio Pedro Bidegain will play host to the first leg which is set to be played on Wednesday evening in Buenos Aires.
Atletico Mineiro won’t come into it in the highest of spirits after falling 2-0 to bitter rivals Cruzeiro in the Campeonato Mineiro 1 final at the weekend. Galo have won the first leg in front of the home fans 3-1, but it was not enough of a cushion as Cruzeiro found the 3way to snatch a 2-0 victory in the reverse fixture. In between these outings, Thiago Larghi’s side demolished lower-division Ferroviario 4-0 in the early stages of Copa do Brasil. Serie A is about to start next weekend.
Unlike the case is in Brazil, Argentine teams have already played 22 rounds of Superliga season. San Lorenzo have been doing very well under Claudio Biaggio so far. They currently sit at the sky-high third position with 42 points in 11 games. They have been on a run of three straight clean sheet wins before suffering a disastrous 0-5 loss at home to Godoy Cruz in the derby of the Matchday last weekend. Such a defeat came literally out of nowhere and it will be very interesting to see how Santo will react against such a strong opposition here. The visitors have a super powerful weapon in the final third in the like of Ricardo Oliveira who has notched three goals in last three games and who will no doubts be looking to exploit the holes in San Lorenzo’s defense here.
