Sampdoria vs Inter Milan
Italian Serie A.
Date: Saturday 22 September 2018
Kick-Off: 19:30 UK,
Venue: Stadio Luigi Ferraris (Genoa).
After an incredibly fight back against Tottenham, Inter will hope to use that to inspire them as they face a tricky test against Sampdoria in league action on Saturday.
Whilst Nerazzurri fans are still happy with the result, which marks their first Champions League positive result in nearly seven years, Inter still have a lot of work to do.
Tottenham collapsed at the first sign of trouble after Mauro Icardi’s volley, and Luciano Spalletti’s side will be wise not to get too ahead of themselves as they will face tougher tests in the Champions League to get out of their quartet.
In Serie A, Inter have struggled, and that was made evident with their shocking loss to Parma last round. They have also lost to Sassuolo already this term and the pressure is certainly on Spalletti to turn things around quickly. They will be facing a side who have a formidable home record, with just one loss in their last six at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris and have already beaten Napoli this season. A 3-0 result against the Partenopei is nothing to sniff at, and Sampdoria come into this game having drawn 1-1 with Fiorentina.
Yes, they missed out on a Europa League spot but this time around, they will be hoping to improve on their away form that cost them a top-six berth.
Although they have started off well, they have a bad track record against Inter and have conceded a whopping 12 goals in their last five fixtures against the Nerazzurri.
Notably, they tried to build their standing off their home record, but Inter did come to their home stadium and humiliated them 5-0 last season, and that’s something that will still sting as it was just over six months ago.
Inter have won just one game in Serie A all season and are eight points off the top after a poor start to the term.
Spalletti will be hoping that his team’s turnaround against Tottenham will be the turning point for his side as they desperately need a result in order to start closing the gap on Juventus at the top of the table.
Sampdoria vs Inter Milan: Head-to-head statistics
- Sampdoria have won only four of their last 28 Serie A games against Inter (D10 L14)
- However, three of those wins came within their most seven recent meetings
- Still, they have conceded 12 times in their last five meetings with Inter
- Inter have won four of their last five away fixtures in Serie A
- Inter forward Mauro Icardi has scored 10 goals against his former team, Sampdoria – more than against any other team in Serie A
Sampdoria vs Inter Milan: Prediction
Despite Inter’s woes, they actually do have a decent away record with wins in four of their last five away fixtures. There was that loss to Sassuolo, but the Neroverdi have proved to be a nuisance for Inter in the past, and they do have a strong historical record against Sampdoria.
Coming from behind against Tottenham could be just what they need to turn their fortunes around, and having being embarrassed against Parma last weekend, Inter will be desperate to make amends, but let’s not forget that Sampdoria are playing at home.
They will not want to be humiliated like what happened last time and given that they did put three past Napoli they should be able to nick a goal.
Expect BTTS here in a tricky test for the visitors in what could be an entertaining fixture for the neutrals.
