Rosenborg vs APOEL Nicosia:
Champions League Qualifiers.
Date: Wednesday, 27-July-2016
Kick-Off: 18:15 UK
Venue: Lerkendal Stadion (Trondheim).
Norwegian Champions Rosenborg Ballklub will look to carry forward their impressive form when they host Cyprus outfit APOEL Nicosia for the first leg of Champions League Qualification third round.
Rosenborg made their last Champions League appearance in the 2007/08 season and didn’t make it out of the group stages. The defending Norwegian Champions are on an excellent run in this domestic season and will be keen to end their 7 year old drought of elite European Football. However, they made it to the UEFA Europa league on 2015/16 and 2013/14, but missed out on 2014/15.
APOEL Nicosia had enjoyed substantial success in UEFA tournaments in recent seasons, despite for their stature. They reached the group stages of the Champions League on three of the last five seasons, the latest being 2014/15 season. Their most impressive run came during the 2011/12, where they surprised everyone by booking the date for quarter-finals against Real Madrid.
Rosenborg vs APOEL Nicosia: Head-to-Head Stats
This will be the first time these two sides are meeting in a UEFA branded tournament.
The only meeting or Rosenborg with a Cypriot opposition was during the Play-Offs of 2011/12 Europa League campaign. They were eliminated by AEK Larnaca who defeated them at Cyprus by 2-1 after the first leg in ended in a 0-0 stalemate.
APOEL were drawn against Norwegian sides twice in UEFA competitions and hold a 100% win record after winning in each of the 4 matches.
Rosenborg vs APOEL Nicosia: Prediction
Rosenborg are on a 16 match unbeaten run in the league and are rightly at the top of the Norwegian Tippeligaen. The 3-2 defeat to Norkopping in the second leg of the Champions league qualifiers is their only loss in the last 22 matches. At home, they are even impressive and boast of a 100% win record from 11 matches played so far this season.
The two legged clash against The New Saints F.C was the only match that Astana were involved since their domestic league finished in May. One of the main concern will be the fitness and second will be their poor away form towards the end of last season. APOEL haven’t lost in any of the 4 meetings against teams from Norway and this may be under threat on Wednesday.
Rosenborg are a formidable unit at home and they will look to play attacking football. They have scored 20 goals from the last five home games and I will be backing them to score at least twice here.
Rosenborg vs APOEL Nicosia: Tips
