Roma vs Fiorentina
Italian Serie A.
Date: Saturday, 7 April 2018
Kick-Off: 17:00 UK,
Venue: Stadio Olimpico (Rome).
Roma’s Champions League hopes are pretty much over after a 4-1 loss to Barcelona, and the Giallorossi will look to get back to winning ways as they take on Fiorentina at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday.
It’s hardly a shock result, as the Lupi were the huge underdogs heading into any clash with the Blaugrana. However, they had two clear-cut penalty shouts at Camp Nou that were disregarded when things were much closer in the game, and one can only wonder had things gone their way whether it would have any impact on the score-line. Despite Edin Dzeko netting a consolation effort, it will take nothing short of a miracle for Eusebio Di Francesco’s side to overturn this 4-1 loss – and to do so whilst keeping Lionel Messi & Co. off the scoresheet in Rome.
As such, it’s back to domestic affairs for Roma, who will now refocus their efforts on making sure they can secure third place and an automatic Champions League berth. They’re locked in a close battle with cross-town rivals Lazio and Inter for the last two Champions League places, and having stumbled to a 1-1 draw with Bologna they sit just one point ahead of the Nerazzurri and three ahead of the Biancocelesti.
However, as they aim to get back on track, they will face a Fiorentina side who have been in inspired form as of late. The Viola have won their last five games and as a result are thus closing in rapidly on a possible Europa League spot. It would be a stunning turnaround for Stefano Pioli’s side, who have spent much of the season floundering in mid-table. They come into this game notably having beaten Udinese 2-0 in what surely would have been a very emotional game for the Tuscan outfit – as it was that game which was re-scheduled following Davide Astori’s untimely demise shortly before kick off in Udine.
Still, Roma will present a much tougher task for the Gigliati than some of their prior opposition, which included Benevento, Crotone, and Chievo.

Roma vs Fiorentina: Prediction
With the Champions League now a foregone possibility, Roma will focus all their efforts into getting back on track in the league. The Giallorossi have been pretty strong at home, but Fiorentina, buoyed by their winning run as of late that has seen them grind out five straight wins, certainly will want to keep the good times going and could pose some problems.
However, the visitors will be missing key player Federico Chiesa due to a ban, which obviously will be a huge blow in terms of attacking options. Roma could also shuffle their squad as they won’t want to be totally overrun when Barcelona come to town next week. This will not be the easiest of games for the Lupi, but they nonetheless should be able to pick up all three points.
