Roma vs Atalanta
2018/19 Italian Serie A.
Date: Monday 27 August 2018
Kick-Off: 19:30 UK,
Venue: Stadio Olimpico (Rome).
Roma and Atalanta will be the final game as matchday two wraps up on Monday evening. For calcio fans, it will surely be an interesting weekend that pitted plenty of big sides against each other, including Lazio against Juventus and Napoli, and Roma versus Atalanta definitely falls into that category of bigger sides.
La Dea certainly are not in the same league as Lazio, Juventus, Napoli, and Roma – all teams battling for a Champions League spot and the Scudetto, but they did manage to surprise everyone and finish fourth in 2017.
Had Italy been given four spots back then, they would have been in the Champions League. And they come into this game having cruised to a very comfortable 4-0 win over Frosinone, so confidence will be sky high in their camp.
That’s despite losing Mattia Caldara and Bryan Cristiante to transfers this summer, but veteran striker Papu Gomez is still with the squad. Gian Piero Gasperini has decided to clearly focus more on European competition this season, as Atalanta impressed in the Europa League last term, so domestic competition could end up eventually taking a back seat.
Roma, by contrast, will have to decide where to focus their efforts. The Giallorossi struggled against Torino and it took a late goal from Edin Dzeko to snatch all three points.
Having lost Alisson and Radja Nainggolan could prove to be very costly for both their top four and their European ambitions this term, and Eusebio Di Francesco will be under added pressure to replicate the same great showings that saw Roma beat Barcelona in the Champions League and make it to the semi-finals last season.
That being said, they’ve added some quality such as Javier Pastore and young rising star Justin Kluivert – son of Patrick Kluivert – and secure Cristiante on loan from Atalanta.
La Dea stumbled to a scoreless draw with Copenhagen in the first leg of their Europa League tie and will be desperate to turn that around so Roma will hope to capitalize on their opponents likely being distracted by that must-win clash.
Roma vs Atalanta: Head-to-head statistics
- Atalanta have won just six times at the Stadio Olimpico in Serie A
- Overall, Roma’s home record against Atalanta in Serie A is W34 D16 L6
- Four of the last five meetings between the two sides have seen both sides score
Roma vs Atalanta: Prediction
With Atalanta having enjoyed their European adventure last season and wanting it to last longer this time around, La Dea will clearly focus their attention on the Europa League.
That means their attention will be already turned towards the second leg of their clash with Copenhagen, and Roma can exploit that after their insipid showing against Torino.
Still, the visitors could nick a goal, especially as all but one of the last five meetings have seen both teams score, but given that Atalanta have won just six times at this ground in Serie A, it’s hard to see the visitors picking up all three points here.
