Rennes vs Nantes
French Coupe de la Ligue
Date: Wednesday, 19 December 2018
Kick-Off at 20:05 UK / 21:05 CET
Venue: Roazhon Park (Rennes).
Rennes enjoyed a string Coupe de la Logue run in the previous term when they suffered a semi-final elimination to latter winners PSG after a narrow 2-3 loss at home. They will begin the new campaign on Wednesday hosting Ligue 1 rivals Nantes in one of the most interesting fixtures of the last 16 round.
Les Rouges et Noirs will come into this high on confidence after clinching three consecutive victories across competitions. They made it to the knockout phase of Europa League and the fact they’ll be playing three other competitions in 2019 might cause the new head coach Julien Stephan to rest his first team regulars here against the Canaries.
Stephan managed to turn a corner for Rennes who were struggling for consistency under Sabri Lamouchi this season. The managerial change happened after a 1-4 home loss to Strasbourg at the start of the month. The team responded with three subsequent 2-0 victories. Will the streak be continued on Wednesday in this League Cup tie?
Rennes vs Nantes: Head-to-head
As many as 16 of 42 head to head affairs ended without a winner.
Nantes lead the head to head tie by two wins.
Interestingly, each of past six head to head encounters produced goals at both ends.
Teams shared spoils in three of past four H2H outings in the league (1-1 was the scoreline in all of these ties).
Rennes vs Nantes: Prediction
Nantes have also been playing hot and cold since the start of the season. Their fortunes were changed when Vahid Halilhodzic took charge in November. After a bright start to his reign at Stade de la Beaujoire – Louis Fonteneau, Halilhodzic saw his new team get in a three-game winless streak. It came to an end on December 5th when Canaries dispatched Marseille 3-2 at home after a comeback.
This is a clash between two evenly-matched teams and we’d not be surprised to see another 1-1 draw when they come across each other on Wednesday.
