Reading vs Derby County
English League Championship
Date: Friday, 3rd August 2018
Kick-off at 20:00 UK/ 21:00 CET

The moment all EFL fans have been waiting for has finally arrived. The lower English leagues are back and Championship opens up on Friday with an intriguing fixture – Reading taking on Derby County.
The Royals will want to forget that last season even existed. The team went from play-offs the season before to fighting for relegation last year. The season started with Jaap Stam in charge but after a lot of disappointing results eventually Paul Clement managed to keep the team above the water and finish in disappointing 20th place.
Reading’s preparations for the new season were far from satisfying. The played 6 preseason friendlies drawing 3 and losing the other 3. The games were not against high profile teams with only Fulham and Crystal Palace being in the Premier League. The team lost to Eastleigh and Wimbledon and its hard to see them improving for the first round.
Derby booked a place in the play-offs last season. This year the team has the same level of ambitions. But as we have seen many times before when a team loses in the play-offs breaks apart in the following season. It will be difficult to keep the same level of performance but the Rams have what it takes. Last years goalscorers Matej Vydra has attracted a lot of attention upon himself and it will be key for Derby to keep hold of him.
Derby had a good pre-season winning 4 of their 5 games. Victories over last season champs Wolves and Premier League side Southampton speak for ambition and quality in the squad.
Reading vs Derby: Head-to-head
- Reading are winless in 6 pre-season games
- Derby won 4 of their 5 pre-season games
- Last 5 direct clashes have seen both teams finding the net
- Derby County are undefeated in 6 games against Reading at Madejski Stadium – 4 draws and 2 victories
Reading vs Derby: Predictions
Derby County have what it takes to reach the play-offs again. The team looked sharp in pre-season and will be looking to start strong the season itself.
Reading saw the same weaknesses in the friendlies as we have seen in last season and the team may be gearing up for yet more disappointments.
The Rams have the quality and will be looking to start with a victory.
Despite the head to head clashes with lots of goals we can expect a bit more cautious approach at the start of the season without many goals.
