Qarabag FK vs AS Roma
UEFA Champions League 2017/18 – Group Stage
Date: Wednesday, 27th September 2017
Kick-off at 17:00 UK/ 18:00 CET
Venue: Tofiq Bahramov Stadium (Baku).
Qarabag’s debut at the Champions League has not gone well as they were thrashed by a massive 6-0 margin by Chelsea. A similar test awaits them on matchday 2 with the opponents being Serie A runner-up AS Roma. The minimum expectation for the Azerbaijani side will be to avoid another humiliating defeat.
Despite dominating the domestic league over the past few seasons, Qarabag come with a poor record in European competitions. They were at the Europa League group phase for the past three seasons, but failed to progress further. Their home record is decent though after having held Fiorentina, Inter Milan and Monaco to stalemates.
AS Roma started the campaign with a goal-less draw against Atletico Madrid. This might look like a positive result on paper, but truth to be told, the Italians benefited from La Liga’s side poor finishing. On the flip side, Eusebio Di Francesco’s men managed just 1 shot on target, which expose familiar woes in European nights for the men in yellow and reds.
The Serie A giants are now without a win in 7 Champions League games. Moreover, they managed just 2 wins from the last 20 matches in the tournament. The away form is naturally poor with their last away win dating back to November 2010. Since then, it is a barren run of 10 matches.
Qarabag vs Roma: Head-to-head
Wednesday’s Champions League fixture will be the first head-to-head meeting between the two clubs. Also, Roma’s first encounter with a club from Azerbaijan.
Qarabag were grouped together with Italian clubs in two of their three appearances at the Europa League group stage. Fiorentina last season and Inter Milan in 2014/15 were those opponents and they are unbeaten in four matches managing just 1 draw in the process.
Qarabag vs Roma: Prediction
Qarabag seem like an easy opponent for Roma on paper. But the big question here is if the Italians can put an end to their dismal run at the tournament. Looking back at the years, Roma had lost away game to BATE Borisov and were held to a draw by Club Cluj, whom can be compared to a team like Qarabag. Therefore, this won’t be easy for the Serie A side with Qarabag backing themselves to do better at their home turf.
