PSV Eindhoven have to do without Champions League football this season after making back-to-back appearances at the competition. A disappointing 2016/17 campaign in the Eredivisie saw them finish third in the standings and thereby got to the third qualifying round of the Europa League.
The Dutch team’s last appearance at the Europa League was three seasons ago in 2014/15. They muscled through the qualifying round on that occasion, beating Austrian outfit St. Polten and Shakhtyor Salihorsk from Belarus.
PSV never lost a third qualifying round fixture in the Europa League.
The team managed by Phillip Cocu prepared for this fixture on the background of a number of warm-up matches. The results are moderate as they won 2, drawn 1 and lost 1.
NK Osijek qualified for the third round of the qualifiers for the first time in their history.
They defeated Swiss club FC Luzern 3-2 on aggregate in the second round. It was a 2-0 win at home in the first leg that made the difference as they suffered a 2-1 defeat in the return leg.
Osijek’s only previous appearance at a Europa League qualifiers was in 2012/13. They lost to Swedish club Kalmar in the second round by a massive 1-6 aggregate score.
The Croatians are coming on the back of poor form after failing to win their last three competitive matches. The away loss to Luzern in the second round of qualifiers is sandwiched between two draws in the Prva Liga.
