The 2014 Champions League finalists Atletico Madrid travel to PSV Eidhoven for the first leg of knockout round tie on Wednesday evening.

PSV Eindhoven have qualified for the knockout stages for the first time since 2006-07 season, when they went as far as quarter finals before being eliminated by Liverpool after losing on both away and home.

Since Diego Simeone was installed at the helm of Atletico Madrid, they have grown into a real form both domestically and in Europe. They last year’s campaign witnessed them losing out in quarter finals by 1-0 aggregate score to city rivals Real Madrid.

PSV are currently top of the Eredivise just a point clear-off Ajax after 24 matches into the season. They have only lost once in the 24 league matches, the defeat coming against Heracles on September 2015.

They were drawn together with Manchester United, CSKA Moskow and Wolfsburg in the Champions League Group B this year and have won all of their home matches, but failed to win any of the away matches. They qualified as second placed team with 10 points knocking out European power house Manchester United.

Atletico Madrid are currently second in the Spanish La Liga after 25 matches, 8 points below leaders Barcelona and 1 point above third placed Real Madrid. When coming against the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona, the Rojiblancos have failed to win in any of the 3 matches, as they lost twice to Barcelona and draw one at home against Real Madrid.

In the Champions League this year, they were drawn in an easy group alongside Benfica, Galatasaray and Astana and qualified as league winners. They have won 4 matches, draw one and lost to Benfica at home.

PSV Eindhoven vs Atletico Madrid: Prediction

Atletico Madrid will go as slight favourites based on their good form in Europe this season. While PSV should not be considered as a pushover as they have won all of their three group matches in the competition this season. Moreover, Atletico Madrid is the only side that broke PSV’s unbeaten record against Spanish sides at their home since 1996.

This match has every prospect of ending in a draw and my prediction is a 1-1 stalemate.

  1. Dutch teams have little success in Champions League in over a decade. But Spanish teams are consistently doing well year after year in European Competitions. Can PSV upset the odds this season ? I don’t think so ? Well, I think it is really hard to score goals against Atletico.
