Portugal vs Netherlands
UEFA Nations League A Final
Date: Sunday, 9th June 2019
Kick-off at 19.45 UK/ 20.45 CET
Venue: Estádio do Dragão (Porto).
Once again Portugal seems to be riding on the back of some ‘Cristiano’ mojo to lead themselves to footballing glory. His semi-final performance closely resembled that of his Juventus game against Atleti this season, to single-handedly take the club to Quarter Finals of the Champions League.
The target-man began with a superb free-kick in the 25th minute to start the fireworks, but Switzerland managed to equalize. The striker had saved the best for the last though, as he fired two goals in the space of two minutes, right at the end of the match.
The other finalists Netherlands too come on top of a great performance in the semis against England. The latter took the lead via a Marcus Rashford penalty in the 32nd minute, and faced an imminent exit from the competition.
But the young Ajax captain Mathijs de Ligt rose to the occasion and fired in the equalizer fifteen minutes from the completion of full time. Later in the extra time, the Dutch recorded two more goals to complete the 3-1 scoreline and to start their redemption arc after failing to qualify to the last World Cup.
Portugal vs Netherlands Head-to-head (h2h)
- Five of the last seven matches had goals at either end of the pitch.
- Netherlands recorded a 0-3 win the last time these two met.
- Last Portugal won against this opponent was back in 2012.
- Seven of the last eight meetings had Portugal finding the back of the net.
Portugal vs Netherlands Prediction
Netherlands have rebuilt themselves from the scratch after failing to qualify for the last two major tournaments. The rise of another golden generation of players has helped them in this regards. Especially the presence of Virgil Van Dijk at the back, who was instrumental in leading Liverpool to European glory provides hope and confidence to the rest of the group.
Complementing the guy are others like Frenkie de Jong, Mathis de Ligt, Jasper Cillessen, etc. The form the team is in, it would be hard for Portugal to override the Dutch waves of attack. And especially since Portugal seems to be a one-man-army with Cristiano at the helm.
Expect Netherlands to avoid a loss, and keep going with their momentum. Regarding goals, Portugal will be desperate to lift another title after their Euro Cup triumph. And the form Cristiano Ronaldo is in, it would be unwise to bet against him getting on the scoresheet.
As such, expect the Dutch not to lose in regular time, and goals by both teams.
