Portugal vs Mexico
2017 Confederations Cup – Third place play-off
Date: Sunday, 2nd July 2017
Kick-off at 13:00 UK/ 14:00 CET
Venue: Otkrytiye Arena (Moscow).
Portugal’s flamboyance in the Confederations Cup came to end in the saddest fashion with the heart breaking penalty shootout defeat against Chile in the semifinals. The Selecao have one more chance to win a silverware when they take on Mexico in the third placed play-off on Sunday, 2nd July 2017.
The European champions had plenty of chances to win semifinals inside the regulation 90 minutes. But the resilient Chile did pull off a surprise as we predicted.
Portugal were on a match 5 unbeaten run, which has now come to end with figures of 4 wins and 1 draw. They had scored in 10 consecutive matches before firing blanks at the Kazan Arena.
On the other hand, Mexico were comprehensively beaten by a young German side by a 4-1 margin. They never got control of the game as German took an early initiative by racing to a 2-0 lead within 8 minutes from kick-off. Mexico had previously defeated New Zealand and Russia from goal down. But, they struggled to find that crucial pass into the box despite having the fair share of possession.
Mexico’s last defeat in an official competitive game was against Chile in the Copa America Centenario quarter finals back in 2016. This is a clear evidence of the team’s inability to perform at the optimum level in knockout stages of the tournament.
Portugal vs Mexico: Head-to-head
Portugal are unbeaten in the three games played against Mexico so far. Before the 2-2 draw in the opening group game of this edition’s Confederations Cup, Portugal won the previous two meetings by exactly 1 goal margin.
Portugal vs Mexico: Prediction
Mexico have a big problem in their defense and which was exposed by all teams they came across in this tournament. Portugal are an attacking oriented side with plenty of talented youngsters. If Mexico can’t fix their problems, they will suffer a similar fate as in the semifinal clash against Germany. Portugal will have no troubles in creating a high number of scoring chances. And we believe their forwards can do a better work in this third placed play-off.
