Portsmouth vs AFC Wimbledon: Prediction

Ellis Harrison and John Marquis lead the second string and ensured Pompey continued their defense of the FA Trophy with a 1-2 victory at Walsall in the third round.

Kenny Jacket mixed things up for mid-week FA Trophy clash so most of his first team players will be fresh, up and running for Wimbledon game in which Pompey will try to wash sour taste from their fans’ mouth post-Boxing Day and get back into promotion hunt for Peterborough, who’s only a point away at 6th.

Jacket’s men are invincible at their home ground this season, having managed seven wins from twelve games, without a single defeat. Burton Albion was the closest one to do it but Portsmouth came back from 0-2 down and their reign of terror began.

Wimbledon appeared to be heading for all three points but ultimately had to settle for one with a late penalty by Southend’s Charlie Kelman earning a draw for the visitors.

That win would’ve put some cushion between them and other relegation candidates but this way, their fight continues. Currently at 19th, with three points and one game more than Tranmere, their four-way battle with Rochdale, MK Dons and already mentioned Rovers rages on.

The Wombles very much struggles on the road; they’ve got only seven points from twelve travels. Their games are often tight, with The Dons opening the score lines but without mental capacity to hold on their lead and see the games out.

And that very lack of fortitude and mental prowess is why I’m backing Portsmouth to take all the spoils. Pompey plays exceptionally well in front of their own crowd, often getting on score sheets more than once and while Wombles might show them some resistance, in the end it will be futile.

We’ll go with goals too. Wimbledon showed us they can score on the road, Pompey home form and h2h history indicates an open game so hopefully they’ll both brace us with other goals galore.
