Portland Timbers vs Seattle Sounders: Preview and Prediction

Portland Timbers vs Seattle Sounders:
MLS Regular Season,
Date: Sunday, July 17, 2016
Kick-off: 20:00 UK Time
Venue: Providence Park (Oregon).

The two of the most bitter footballing rivals of United States clash against each other when Portland Timbers host Seattle Sounders FC at the Providence Park on Saturday evening.

Portland Timbers are 7th in the Western Conference standings with 26 points from 20 matches. While Seattle Sounders have 20 points from 18 matches and sit at 9th in the table at a 2 point distance from the last placed Huston Dynamo. Either teams had won 6 matches each this season, but Seattle had lost 10 games, 4 more than their Saturday’s opponent Portland.

The Timbers are coming into this match after drawing each of their previous three matches, two of which are 0-0 stalemates. They are also on an 8 match unbeaten run at the moment, but won just 3 and drawn 5. Portland had won in 3 of their last 4 home games and tasted defeat only once in the last 7.

Seattle Sounders FC earned a well-deserved 5-0 home win against a second string FC Dallas on Wednesday, which ended their four match win-less run. They had lost in 3 of the previous four and 6 of the previous 8. They remain a poor side in away games and won just once on the road so far this season, losing 5 of the 8 games.

Goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey remains out with an injury and is the only confirmed absentee for Portland Timbers.

Portland Timbers vs Seattle Sounders: Head-to-Head Stats

  • Overall (Last 19 matches): Portland – 9 wins, Seattle – 8 wins, Draws – 5.
  • Portland at home vs Seattle (Last 8): 4 wins, 2 draws, 2 losses.

They played against each other four times last season, three in MLS and once in the US Open Cup. Seattle Sounders won in both of the MLS home fixture 1-0 and 2-1, while Portland won their home fixture 4-1.

The fourth round tie in the US Open Cup 2015 between these two sides was tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation 90 minutes. A goal each in each half of the added extra time earned Portland a 3-1 win at the Starfire Sports Complex.

There were no draws in the last five meetings between these two sides in MLS, with Seattle winning four of those ties.

Portland Timbers vs Seattle Sounders: Prediction

The current form favors the Timbers, but this is a mini derby and neither teams want to end in the losing side. So this has the making of a fierce battle but a result is certain on Saturday’s encounter. And my initial instinct is to back Portland Timbers to edge a win on the basis of their good home form this season.

Four of the last five meetings between these two sides had witnessed both teams scoring goals and I believe is a real possibility in this fixture and I back a 2-1 correct score in favor of the hosts.
