Portland Timbers vs Atlanta United
USA – Major League Soccer
Date: Monday, 19 August 2019
Kick-off at 03:00 UK/ 04:00 CET
Venue: Providence Park (Portland, Oregon).
Portland are currently occupying the 7th position in the Western Conference, with just a point ahead of Playoff chasers, FC Dallas.
The Timbers should secure post season without any problems since they will play nine out of ten remaining games of the regular season at their Providence Park. They are a strong home team and I fully expect them to finish 2nd or 3rd in the West and make a deep Playoff run.
Atlanta United have won the 2nd edition of ‘Campeones Cup’ (which is an event where Mexican and American champions are locking horns) after beating Club America 3-2. In just ten days, they will face Minnesota United in US Open final, so they stand a good chance of adding another trophy to the collection.
When it comes to MLS, they’re sitting at 2nd place in the East, just three points behind a leader, Philadelphia Union, with a game in hand. Both teams are looking good right now, but I’m sure reigning MLS Champs fancy their chances of topping the Conference.
Portland Timbers vs Atlanta United: Head to Head
They have met three times so far, and we have seen two draws and Atlanta 2-0 win in their latest outing.
Both teams to score – YES came in two out of three games played.
Under 2.5 was a winning bet whenever they faced each other.
Portland Timbers vs Atlanta United: Prediction
Ok, let’s make the case for goals and end that ‘under 2.5’ streak in H2H duel.
Portland is an ‘overish’ team at home. They’re scoring 2.5 goals per game and allowing 1.13. We have seen at least four goals in 75% of their matches at the Providence Park. In addition to that, their Argentine striker Brian Fernandez has netted five goals in last five games.
Atlanta United tend to struggle away from home with W/D/L record of 3-0-8. They do score goals, though. In fact, they’re on a 5-game losing streak on the road despite scoring 8 in the process. Their defense is often exposed due to their attacking style of play and they’re conceding almost two per game. The Venezuelan hitman Josef Martinez has bagged 13 goals in last 9 games for the club.
Artificial turf won’t be an issue for guests as they have it installed on their stadium as well. We’re in for a high-tempo, entertaining game that should generate goals in big numbers.
