Poland vs Latvia
EURO 2020 Qualification
Date: Sunday, 24 March 2019
Kick-Off at 19:45 UK / 20:45 CET
Venue: Stadion Narodowy (Warsaw).
Poland host Latvia in what should be a one-way street from the very kick off to an end given the massive gulf in quality between the two teams. The hosts will be highly motivated to return to the winning ways in front of the home fans after rather disappointing campaigns at World Cup and Nations League.
The Eagles entered the new qualifying process winless in six consecutive matches across competitions. They were too easy to break down at the World Cup in Russia as five shipped goals in opening two fixtures against Senegal and Colombia knocked them out instantly. Poland failed to keep a clean sheet in any of six matches after the Russia failure. Can they finally make it count and keep their net untouched here against one of two group underdogs Latvia?
Poland vs Latvia: Head-to-head
Poland won four and lost one of five meetings with Latvia (7-3 goal difference in the process).
However, Latvia’s only victory against the Eagles came on the road in EURO 2004 Qualifications (0-1).
Just one of five H2H encounters saw goals scored at both ends.
Poland vs Latvia: Prediction
Much like Poland, Latvia had a dismal Nations League campaign. The difference, though, is the visitors featured the weakest division. They took just four points from six games against the likes of Andorra, Kazakhstan and Georgia.
It was an extremely underwhelming campaign for Latvians who hired Serbian manager Slavisa Stojanovic as the new head coach just this month. It’s fair to say Stojanovic has limited quality in his ranks. Latvia failed to stay competitive in the lowest division of European football and we just can’t imagine them making an upset against group favourites away in Warsaw.
Poland have a deadly attacking duo in the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Krzysztof Piatek who are both expected to make the starting line-up here. We’d not be surprised to see a demolishing victory by three or more goals difference for the hosts.
