The reigning champions opened the new season with a goalless draw against Real Salt Lake.
The Canadians will thus be looking to grab their first win of the campaign this Saturday when they travel to Talen Energy Stadium to take on Philadelphia Union.
The hosts also played goalless in their opener with Vancouver Whitecaps. Jim Curtin’s defense surprisingly looked solid, even though the team has been more than vulnerable during the off-season.
The team signed a host of new players in the center of the park where they looked quite solid in a 4-5-1 formation with two defensive midfielders (Medunjanin and Jones) and the national team member Alejandro Bedoya as the attacking midfielder.
Toronto should have claimed the initial victory at Rio Tinto Stadium, but theirs tar man Sebastian Giovinco was way below his standards.
The Atomic Ant failed to convert the penalty at the half-hour-mark. However, Toronto will be super tough to break down with the 3-5-2 formation as Greg Vanney has one hell of a midfield led by Michael Bradley.
Philadelphia Union vs Toronto: Head to head
The teams have seven wins each ahead of their 21st meeting. Five of the last six head to head encounters have seen the option of both sides scoring.
This includes the 3-1 victory Toronto grabbed in October last year when Giovinco, Altidore and Osorio were on target.
Philadelphia Union vs Toronto: Prediction
It will be very interesting to see how Philly’s defense will cope with Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco on Saturday evening.
The visitors certainly have more quality in their squad, but we generally see a huge battle at the center of the pitch and very few goal scoring chances on both ends.
