Peru vs Paraguay
Date: Saturday, 23 March 2019
Kick-Off at 00:00 UK / 01:00 CET
Venue: Red Bull Arena (Harrison).
Both Peru and Paraguay are looking to fix the impression after a poor run of results in friendlies in the second half of 2018. They are set to take on each other in an all-South American friendly on Friday evening on the neutral venue of Red Bull Area in Harrison, New Jersey.
Los Incas come into the game as favourites on paper, at least by the look at team’s squads. Unlike Paraguay, they featured last summer’s World Cup in Russia where they generally produced three fine displays in spite of seeing an early group phase exit. Ricardo Gareca’s men offered a strong resistance in two narrow defeats to Denmark and France (0-1 apiece) before picking up a consolation victory over Australia in the third round.
Peru will, however, want to boost up their defensive confidence ahead of Copa America. They were fairly easy to break down lately allowing five goals in two losses to Ecuador and Costa Rica in November last year.
Peru vs Paraguay: Head-to-head
Peru were the dominant force in this match-up over the last couple of years.
Los Incas won each of last five meetings with Paraguay conceding only two goals in the process.
Their last meeting came back in June 2017 (also in a friendly) when Peru claimed a 1-0 victory.
Peru vs Paraguay: Prediction
Los Guaranies can’t be particularly proud of their form in latest friendlies either. They lost three and drew one of past four. It was a bitterly disappointing record if we know the opposition came in the likes of Venezuela, United States, Japan and South Africa along the way.
Paraguayans made a managerial change after such poor streak of results hiring Eduardo Berizzo as the new head coach. The former Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao manager will make his debut on the bench here against Los Incas.
Nevertheless, we have to say this Paraguayan generation does not quite promise big results. Newcastle’s Miguel Almiron and Genoa’s Antionio Sanabria are team’s main stars and they are expected to lead Los Guaranies to a potential upset here.
The quality and the head to head trend is on Peru’s side and we expect the hosts to prove the favourites tag on the pitch and take advantage of Paraguay’s defensive holes here.
