Panama vs Honduras
World Cup Qualifiers – North & Central America
Date: Wednesday, 14th June 2017
Kick-off at 2:35 UK/ 3:35 CET
Venue: Estadio Rommel Fernandez (Panama City).
The CONCACAF World Cup qualification group is open wide after Mexico drew 1-1 with USA in their sixth round match on Sunday evening. With the traditional powerhouse Costa Rica performing below par, the stage is set for Panama to move into the second spot. While, Honduras who have been terrible in the opening five rounds is handed an opportunity to revive their campaign.
Last round, we saw Panama producing a well-disciplined performance to deny Costa Rica and clinch a point with a goal-less draw. This has been the case so far with Panama while coming up against the stronger opponents. They have previously held USA to a 1-1 draw and Mexico to a goal-less stalemates. Now, the Central American country must unleash their attack against teams like Honduras and Trinidad to move into the top three of the qualification chart.
Panama are fourth in the table, but they have 6 points from 5 games, which is only 2 short of Costa Rica at the second spot. USA, who earlier played a draw against Mexico are also on 8 points which means Panama can move into third with a draw and second with a win.
However, Panama have only won once in the campaign which was away at Honduras on matchday 1. While remaining points came from draws. They were dealt a surprise blow when Trinidad defeated them 1-0 on matchday 3.
On the other hand, Honduras are a team in real trouble. They were beaten 3-0 by Mexico in the previous round. They have now lost two away matches on the bounce conceding 9 goals. It remained to be seen if some confidence can be restored after the severe blows in recent away trips.
Honduras have 4 points in their bag, which came from a win against T&T and draw with Costa Rica. If they manage to upset Panama on Tuesday evening, they can move to fourth, 1 point behind the third placed USA.
Panama vs Honduras: Head-to-head
Honduras just ended a 7 match barren run against Panama when the teams met at the Copa Centroamericana in January this year. Panama won 3 and drew 4 of the previous 7 duels.
With the 1-0 away win in the first leg of the corresponding fixture, Panama extended their unbeaten run over Honduras in the World Cup qualification matches to 5 games. In the 2014 edition, Panama bagged a 2-0 home win before settling for a 2-2 draw in the away leg.
Panama vs Honduras: Prediction
There is a huge bay in confidence between the two teams. Panama are coming after earning points against strongest teams in the squad, both home and away. While Honduras were miserably beaten in those duels. Moreover, the strong h2h record in World Cup qualifiers back the home side to come up with a win here. Another reason for our suggestion is the poor defense of Honduras, conceding 12 goals in 5 matches.
