Nice vs Rennes:
2016/17 French Ligue 1,
Date: Sunday, 14 August 2016,
Kick-Off: 16:00 UK,
Venue: Allianz Riviera (Nice).
A cagey affair is expected when Nice host Rennes for their first league match of the 2016/17 French football season.
Nice were a surprise package in Ligue 1 last season competition for a Champions League spot with Monaco and Olympique Lyon. They eventually settled for a fourth place finish and missed out on Europe’s elite competition.
However, they will enter directly into the Europa League group stage, but a similar fairy tale must not be expected from them this term. One of the main reason for this is the loss of key players like Hatem Ben Arfa, Nampalys Mendy, Jeremy Pied and Valere Germain, who all left for bigger clubs.
Rennes on the other hand finished 8th last season in almost similar fashion to the previous season where they finished ninth. Their finish to the season should have been better, but a disastrous 6 match win-less run at the end of the season dropped them from 5th to 8th in the table.
Christian Gourcuff will be hoping for a better showing this season. But they will have to do with the presence of their influential goal scorer Ousmane Dembele, who switched alliance to Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund this summer.

Nice vs Rennes: Prediction
This is a tough one to call as both teams are evenly poised on paper. Departure of key players who helped the side finished 4th last season has weakened Nice, while Rennes are poor side on the road.
At the same time, both teams are lacking a genuine goal scorers and combined this with Nice’s strong defensive record at home could make this a rather difficult fixture for the visitors to start with. Also considering the fact that this is the first match of the season and both managers could adopt a cautious approach, goals will be at premium. So under 2.5 goals seems to be the safest bet for this fixture.
However, Nice will go into this game as slim favorites and they could be backed on a double chance to win or draw.
