Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur
2018/19 English Premier League
Date: Saturday, 11th August 2018
Kick-off at 12:30 UK/ 13:30 CET
Venue: St. James Park (Newcastle).
Newcastle United start their 2018/19 English Premier League campaign on Saturday against Tottenham Hotspur, the same team they met at this venue in the opener of last campaign.
Spurs outplayed the Magpies and won 2-0 last August, thanks to second half goals from Dele Alli and Ben Davies.
Rafa Benitez will be keen to avoid a similar result this time knowing that his tame haven’t won an opening fixture since 2012/13.
The last time they did, the opponent was none other than Tottenham by a 2-1 margin and again at this same stadium.
Both teams are coming into matchday 1 under pressure, mainly due to limited activities in transfer market.
Newcastle United Team News
Florian Lejeune is the only player missing out for the Magpies squad. The French defender is currently nursing an injury.
The good news is goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is fit enough to start after missing the friendly against Augsburg through injury.
The new signings Yoshinori Muto and Salomón Rondón are options upfront, but Rafa is most likely to stick with familiar face Joselu for the opening fixture.
Same can be said about the other summer arrival Fabian Schar with the Spanish tactician opting for the partnership of Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles at the heart of defense.
Newcastle Predicted Starting Eleven (4-4-1)
Dubravka – Yedlin, Lascelles, Clark, Dummett – Kennedy, Shelvey, Diame; Ritchie – Perez – Joselu.
Tottenham Hotspur Team News
Mauricio Pochettino signed no players in the summer and he is missing his key players due to their involvement in knockout stage of the World Cup.
Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Kieran Trippier, Jan Vertonghen, Hugo Lloris and Danny Rose are expected to play no part in Saturday’s season opener. While, Victor Wanyama and Moussa Sissoko are out with injuries.
Tottenham Predicted Starting Eleven: (4-2-3-1)
Vorm – Aurier, Sanchez, Carter-Vickers, Davies – Dembele, Dier – Lucas Moura, Eriksen, Son; Llorente.

- However, Spurs won both league games last season to nil, 2-0 at St. James and 1-0 at Wembley.
- Also, Spurs have won 3 of the last 4 h2h meetings at St. James Park, while losing the other.

- And 9 of the last 10 saw at least 2 goals in the second half.
Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur Prediction
The pre-season leaves two contrasting pictures of the teams involved here.
Spurs impressed in the 3 ICC games by picking wins against Roma and AC Milan and a 2-2 draw against Barcelona.
Meantime, Newcastle had a spell to forget and finished off without scoring in three consecutive games.
Anyhow, it will be a different battle altogether when they take the field at St. James Park on Saturday, since pre-season is all about building fitness.
Moving to serious things, the number of first team players missing for Spurs means that they could struggle to play their natural game on Saturday.
Moreover, Pochettino have a poor record in the month of August and average a humble 1.4 points per game.
Newcastle do not often start their season with a bang, they achieved a 10th placed finish only on the back of fine performances post-Christmas.
These are all indicators of a tight clash and I believe teams will struggle to keep the concentrations level for the entire 90 minutes.
It will be a slow start to the game before opening up in the second half. A couple of defensive errors are insight as well, therefore I will be going with over 1.5 goals in the second half as the primary pick.
On the other hand, this is not the sort of match which I back an outright winner.
Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur Betting Tips
Over 1.5 second half goals at 11/9 (2.23)
