Newcastle vs Southampton
England – Premier League
Date: Saturday, 6 February 2021
Kick-off at 15:00 UK/ 16:00 CET
Venue: St. James’ Park.
The Saints just might be the most mentally exhausted team in the whole English flight at the moment. Even the dead-last placed Sheffield United will be on a better note than them.
The reason being, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men were mercilessly battered the last match-day by the Red Devils at the Old Trafford.
One after the other, nine unanswered goals were shot into the Saints’ nets, and by the time the full-time whistle was blown, the players might have been contemplating calling off the season.
Note that the game also brought back old and painful memories, when Leicester defeated them at home 0-9 the last season.
It goes without saying that Hasenhuttl’s men are desperate to put an end to all the jeers and trolls. They need a huge win to distract harsh critics, and also to find their confidence back.
And the match-up against Magpies could not have come at a better time. Steve Bruce’s men are on a long and concerning winless run, and have been conceding goals in huge numbers.
They have also conceded the third-most number of goals of all the teams in the competition, and should they keep up this form, it might not be far into the future before they are pushed into the relegation zone.
By the looks of things, expect the hurt Southampton to respond with a win this weekend.
Newcastle vs Southampton: Head-to-head (h2h)
- The reverse fixture had ended in a 2-0 win for the Saints at home.
- They had recorded five of the past nine overall wins.
- Only once have the hosts kept a clean sheet at this stadium in the last seven encounters.
- The latest clash at this venue had ended in a 2-1 win for the hosts.
Newcastle vs Southampton Prediction
Bruce’s men lost 1-2 at home the last match-day, against Crystal Palace. In the meantime, Hasenhuttl’s men lost 9-0 on the road against Manchester United. However, that was mainly due to their two red cards.
The Saints are insulted and hurt now. We can expect a furious reaction from them, especially against the struggling Magpies. The latter were winless in 12 of their preceding 13 overall match-ups, and they had lost nine of their former eleven fixtures.
They are also on a three-match losing run at home, and are winless in their past five appearances there.
On the other hand, their counterparts have lost just twice on the road since September of 2020, and just thrice since February of 2020. They had also recorded a win to nil in the reverse match-up.
Likely, expect a Southampton win this Saturday.
