UEFA Champions League 2017/18 – Second qualifying round
Date: Tuesday, 18th July 2017
Kick-off at 19:00 UK/ 20:00 CET
Venue: Park Hall (Oswestry).
Welsh side New Saints a stand a tall order in the Champions League qualification fixture against Croatian giants HNK Rijeka.
We were spot on with our prediction for the first leg clash of the corresponding fixture as Rijeka made full use of the home advantage.
The youngsters Josip Misic and Florentin Matei scored on either halves to give the Croats an insatiable 2-0 lead. Rijeka were knocked out from the same stage in previous two seasons. They seem to be ever determined to turn their fortunes this term.
The New Saints overturned a first leg home defeat in the previous round of the competition. However, the deficit was more manageable against a team playing their trade in Gibraltar.
The Welsh club managed to get past the second qualifying round only once, when they were knocked out by Anderlect in the third round during 2010/11. This is their 6th consecutive appearance at the qualifiers, but failed to progress beyond the second stage.
New Saints vs Rijeka: Head-to-head
The first leg of the corresponding fixture that ended 2-0 in favour of Rijeka is the lone meeting between the two sides.
New Saints vs Rijeka: Prediction
Trailing from the first leg, The News Saints must take some confidence looking at Rijeka’s recent away record in UEFA competitions. They haven’t won an away game since 2014, a win-less streak of 5 games with 2 draws and 3 wins. With home fans behind them, the Welsh side are poised to remain unbeaten in this fixture.
