Netherlands vs Sweden
World Cup Qualifiers – Europe (Group A)
Date: Tuesday, 10th October 2017
Kick off at 19:45 UK/ 20:45 CET
Venue: Amsterdam Arena.
Sweden can finish no higher than second if France win v Belarus; can top section if Les Bleus fail
Netherlands can finish second if they score seven or more and win by six-goal margin
Can the Netherlands still qualify for the World Cup ? The answer is yes, but they need to defeat Sweden by scoring a minimum of 7 goals and the winning margin of goals must be no less than 6. So, in real the chances are pretty slim.
Meanwhile, Sweden can top the group with a win here if France fail to beat Belarus. So, it is the Sweden who have plenty of incentives to play for.
Form-wise, both teams had decent runs in a group which is expected to be dominated by the French. The key factor that put Sweden in this strong position is their brilliant home form. They had beaten France here and is followed by the 8-0 thrashing of Luxembourg.
This doesn’t mean that the Swedes were bad in away results. They had won 2 and lost 2 in the process; and the defeats against France and Bulgaria have come by a single goal margin.
The Dutch are way below their usual best. This is mainly due to immense pressure on a new bunch of players to replicate the success of their ancestors. The pressure had unsettled the team and thereby performances on the pitch.
Netherlands vs Sweden: Head-to-head
The teams have a healthy history between each after having met in 24 competitive games. Netherlands are slightly ahead in the h2h with 10 wins as against Sweden’s 8 with the remaining 6 games ending in stalemates.
Netherlands had won their last two games against Sweden at home, 4-1 in the Euro qualifiers in 2010 and 3-1 in a friendly in 2008.
The reverse of the corresponding fixture at Solna was a 1-1 draw.
Netherlands vs Sweden: Prediction
For Netherlands, winning by a six goal margin against Sweden is a herculean task. But, they are expected to go on the attack from the word go and see if they can score 1 or 2 goals in the first half. They will believe this is a possibility as Sweden do not have a strong defense to bank on.
Ultimately, punters can expect a goal fest. Since I do not believe Netherlands have a secure defense, both teams to score and a total of 4 goals is very much a reality.
