Montpellier vs Angers:
2016/17 French Ligue 1,
Date: Saturday, 13 August 2016,
Kick-Off: 19:00 UK,
Venue: Stade de la Mosson (Montpellier).
Montepellier host Angers in their first match of the 2016/17 French League season on Saturday at the Stade de la Mosson.
Montpellier HSC finished 12th in the 2015/16 Ligue 1 table. Their league campaign looked in tatters at one point, but they managed to pull off 4 wins from their last 5 games of the season to get to a decent position in the standings. Montpellier pulled off one of the biggest surprises in European football by winning the Ligue 1 in 2011–12. They have been in and out of the top half of the table since their new manager Frederic Hantz will be looking for a huge improvement in his first fulls season at the club.
Angers SCO did extremely well to finish 9th in the 2015/16 league standings, in their first season after gaining promotion. This is their sixth spell at the top flight of French Football and they didn’t last more than two seasons in each of the past two occasions at Ligue 1. They have an exciting manager in Stephane Moulin, who has been in charge at the helm since 2011. But a lack of new blood into the squad could once again see them fighting hard for a top half finish this season.
Montpellier: Team News
Federic Hantz has a fully fit squad at his disposal and is likely to deploy a 4-2-3-1 formation.
The “Journeyman” Anthony Vanden Borre, who arrived on loan from Anderlecht could be handed the start at the right back position.
While Steve Mounie is expected to start as the loan striker after impressing during his loan spell at Nimes last season.
Montpellier: Expected Starting Line-up (4-2-3-1)
Jourdren – Roussillon, Congre, Hilton, Borre – Saihi, Skhiri- Camara, Sanson, Boudebouz – Mounie.

All eyes will be on Famara Diedhiou, who has been a prolific goal scorer for Clermont Foot in Ligue 2 last season.
Angers: Expected Starting Line-up (4-3-3)
Petric – Andreu, Thomas, Traore, Manceau – Santamaria, Ndoye, Ketkeophomphone, Ekambi, Diedhiou.
Montpellier vs Angers: Head-to-Head Stats
The away team were victorious in each of the two Ligue 1 fixtures of the 2015/2016 season between the two sides. Angers won 2-0 at the Stade de la Mosson on August 2015, while Montpellier had their revenge in the 3-2 thriller at the Stade Jean-Bouin on February 2016.
- Montpellier’s 2-0 defeat at home last season is their only loss to Angers in 10 matches after having won in 5 and drawn 4, at all venues.
- In their 5 matches at home against Angers, Montpellier have won 3, drawn 1 and lost 1.
- While Montpellier are unbeaten in their five trips to Stade Jean-Bouin, with 2 wins and 3 draws.
Montpellier vs Angers: Prediction
Both sides had a decent run in the pre-season with my strong results. Montpellier lost only one of their 5 friendlies and were impressive in the 1-1 draw against Premier League side Sunderland and the 3-0 thrashing of La Liga outfit Real Betis. Angers had some excellent results in the 3-0 win against Bordeaux and the 4-3 win against Guingamp. So they will be in good team spirit and it all depends on how they transfer the good form to Saturday’s opener.
However, Montepellier go in as slight favourites on the basis of home advantage and their overall superior record against Angers. But the visitors are a side that had improved a lot in the past two seasons and they must not be taken lightly. So there will be a winner at the end of ninety minutes and I can see very slim chances of a draw. I will be picking 1 or 2 double chance for this fixture.
Also, four of the five meetings between these two sides at Montpellier have seen under 2.5 goals, which is highly probable when the teams meet again on Saturday.
Montpellier vs Angers: Tips
- Double Chance – Montpellier/Angers.
- Under 2.5 goals.
