Borussia Monchengladbach vs FC Koln: Match Preview

Despite being arguably better of the two during 97th Borussen derby, Gladbach were beaten 2-1 by Dortmund as nearly 54,000 fans at Borussia-Park saw the Foals’ run of nine games without a loss at home come to an end.

It was a result that effectively kicked the Foals out of the race for Meisterschale, with Bayern at the top being currently nine points away as Gladbach slipped down to 5th step of Bundesliga ladder; Champions League football’s still in the cards for Die Borussen, Leverkusen at 4th is just one point away and should Marco Rose’s men get the better of the Goats…

Saturday night defeat versus heated rivals from Dortmund was first of a kind for the Foals at their home ground before Timo Werner’s one-man show and Leipzig’s snatch and run triumph back in August with Monchengladbach grabbing eight victories since; Hoffenheim’s 90th minute equalizer two weeks ago sidetrack them a bit before Dortmund put a full stop to their unbeaten streak.

An entertaining Friday evening at the Benteler-Arena in Paderborn saw 1. FC Köln claim a 2:1 win over nearly certain passengers to 2. Bundesliga as Jorge Meré and Jonas Hector gave the Goats a 2:0 half-time lead with the hosts hitting back late in the game.

The Billy Goats are on a rampage and they don’t mean to stop as Markus Gisdol’s pupils got their eight victory in last ten league games, their third consecutive, with Köln surging up the Bundesliga table, currently occupying 10th place and should they get something from this game in hand, continental football might become an inconceivable reality for Die Geißböcke, with Schalke being just five points away.

On paper, Köln’s away form isn’t anything to write home about, four wins, a draw and seven losses under their belt but without looking up close, one could miss their terrific spike since December rolled in as the Goats managed three victories in last four outings across Germany, outscoring the heck out of everyone with only Black & Yellows of Dortmund defeating Gisdol’s bunch of merry men.

The Foals will be without services of Florian Neuhaus, who’ll sit Rheinland derby out due to suspension, with Denis Zakaria and Florian Mayer missing out following long term injuries. Lászlo Bénes and Ibrahima Traoré picked up some bug which isn’t serious but might keep them out of this game.

Die Geißböcke got Jhon Cordoba, their arguably best player, back in the squad following one-game suspension but there’s one more casualty for their injury list, which now includes Birger Verstraete, Rafael Czichos, Noah Katterbach, Thomas Kessler, Niklas Hauptmann and Christian Clemens.

Borussia Monchengladbach vs FC Koln: Prediction

Despite my personal sympathies and adoration for Gisdol’s gang, I just can’t, clear of head and sound of mind, recommend anyone to put their money on Köln in this clash.

What I can tell you is to bet on the goals. If their form is anything to go by, we’ll se a lot of them. Borussia at home, while getting the better off most of their visitors, have always been pretty leaky, with liberal approach to defending whilst the Goats are scoring for fun.

More action after the break has been pretty common occurrence at Borussia-Park this season so there’s no reason to doubt these two fine, potent and efficient side to bag at least two goals after restart.
