Monaco vs Lyon
France Ligue 1
Date: Friday, 9th August 2019
Kick off at 19:30 UK/ 20:30 CET
Venue: Stade Louis II.
The beginning of the new French season will kick off on Friday evening when Monaco will face Lyon in what is traditionally an open game and an exciting one.
Monaco start the season where they haven’t sold their very best players but at the same time have sold so many great players that they have suffered. Last season they diced with relegation and had to sack Leonardo Jardim and then Thierry Henry and then bring back Jardim after realising there mistake.
So what now for Monaco? What is their objective?
Winning the league is out, and it seems that qualifying for Europe will be too after they clung on for survival. They haven’t brought in too much quality either with their stand out signing actually being a loan in Gelson Martins from Atletico Madrid who failed to become a regular at the La Liga side.
Lyon have change at the club and have appointed Sylvinho. This will be Sylvinho’s first managerial role so it could be seen as risky. Lyon had a decent season where they finished 3rd in the end and qualified for the Champions League qualifiers.
Lyon have been very active in the transfer market where they have sold Tanguy Ndombele to Tottenham for around 60m euros and defender Ferland Mendy for 48m euros to Real Madrid. The big loss though was Nabil Fekir who has joined Real Betis. Some of Lyon’s traditional midfield has been wiped out then and this could be a new era for them.
However, they have spent well and brought in Joachim Anderson from Sampdoria for 30m euros and Thiago Mendes from Lille for 25m euros, so the club are still being serious in going forward even if they have let some good players leave.

Monaco vs Lyon: Prediction
Lyon are the better team but this being the first game of the season and with so much change at Lyon there is no guarantee that the favourites are going to justify their price. Therefore, we should see an open game and one with chances and goals.
Monaco need to shake off last season and start well, so even if they lose this game they need to send a message to their fans that they will play well. This is the reason for our main bet here is to see both teams to score, which we think is nailed on.
