Monaco vs Lille
France – Ligue 1
Date: Saturday, 18 August 2018
Kick-Off at 19:00 UK / 20:00 CET
Venue: Stade Louis II, Monaco.
Monaco once again did a poor effort on getting hold of their main stars in the transfer window.
They lost important midfield figures Thomas Lemar and Fabinho (among others) this summer, bringing their chances of challenging PSG in the battle for the title to minimum.
The Monegasques also had a dreadful pre-season campaign, losing three and drawing one of four games before the official season opener against Nantes last weekend.
Leonardo Jardim’s defensive line looked terrible in the process, allowing 12 goals in these four games, including four in a demolishing defeat to PSG in the French Super Cup clash.
However, it all counted for little as last year’s runners-up got off to a victorious start, beating Nantes 1-3 away at Stade de la Beaujoire – Louis Fonteneau.
All goals came within the final 20 minutes of the game as Rony Lopes, Stevan Jovetic and Radamel Falcao all found the way to harm Nantes’ struggling defensive line on the occasion.
Can Jardim’s men back up such a scintillating display and maintain the perfect record on Saturday evening when they play host to Lille at Stade Louis II?
Monaco vs Lille: Head-to-head
- Monaco completely dominated this match-up over the past couple of years.
- The Monegasques won each of last five encounters with Les Dogues.
- Monaco bagged four goals on three separate occasions in last five games with Lille.
Monaco vs Lille: Prediction
The hosts come into this as heavy favourites based on everything written above and even though Les Dogues also got off to a fine start, beating Rennes 3-1 at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
Lebo Mothiba, Nicolas Pepe and Jonathan Bamba completed the comeback after Chris Galtier’s men conceded the first goal of the match two minutes before the break.
Nevertheless, it’s hard to believe Les Dogues can repeat such display here, especially if we know they have a dreadful H2H record in matches with Monaco over the past couple of years.
Moreover, Lille were poor travellers in the previous term of Ligue 1, losing 13 of 19 matches away from Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
The most recent acquisition Aleksandr Golovin is not fit to feature yet for the hosts, but the likes of Rony Lopes, Jovetic and Falcao should do the job and guide the Monegasques towards a comprehensive victory here.
