Mexico vs Honduras
2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup Quarter Final
Date: Wednesday, 19th July 2017
Kick-off at 3:30 UK/ 4:30 CET
Venue: University of Phoenix Stadium (Glendale).
The tournament favourites Mexico couldn’t have wished for a better opponent than Honduras in the quarter finals of the Gold Cup 2017. They will meet Honduras at the University of Phoenix Stadium on Thursday evening, a team that progressed to this stage on the back of a massive blunder done by French Guiana.
The young Mexican squad had their ups and downs during the group phase of the tournament, but they delivered what is expected of them, that is qualifying to the knockout stages by topping the group. The defeated El Salvador and Curacao by comfortable margin, but the lowest point came when they were held to a goal-less draw by Jamaica.
Positives must be taken from the El Tri’s showings so far. They do have plenty of energy in the midfield. And their offense can be a handful threat to most of the defenses in the competition.
Honduras are here, just because French Guiana did a school boy error. The match between the two was a goal-less draw, but Honduras was later awarded a 3-0 as FIFA penalized French Guiana for fielding an ineligible player Florent Malouda. Interestingly, the Los Catrachos are yet to register a win in normal playing time, nor did they manage to score a goal.
Mexico vs Honduras: Head-to-head
Mexico are unbeaten in the last five meetings with Honduras with 3 wins and 2 draws. Honduras haven’t scored during the period.
Their last meeting at the Gold Cup was in the semi-final of the 2011 edition. Mexico progressed to the finals, only after Honduras forcing the issue into the extra time.
Mexico vs Honduras: Prediction
It is hard to see an improved Honduras as they have serious confidence issues after failing to score a goal in the tournament. To make things worse, their recent record against Mexico is quite poor.
