Olympique Marseille vs Villarreal
Club Friendlies
Date: Saturday, 21 July 2018
Kick-Off at 18:00 UK / 19:00 CET
Venue: Stade de Fargues, Le Pontet.

Marseille will meet Villarreal in a high-profile friendly on Saturday at Stade de Fargues. Even though it’s still too early in the pre-season, we could expect an interesting encounter between two exciting sides.

OM’s players should be in a somewhat better physical condition having started the preparations period a bit earlier than their counterparts, but the Yellow Submarine will be anything but a naïve opposition.

Villarreal generally had a dismal campaign in the previous term of La Liga, but their fans are super exciting for the new season after the team did a fantastic job in the summer transfer window.

The predator such as Carlos Bacca returned to Milan (was on loan at Estadio de la Ceramica), but the likes of Gerard Moreno and Karl Toko Ekambi joined the team as his replacements. Both of them had fabulous campaigns for Espanyol and Angers SCO and there are no doubts they will make a formidable attacking duo in the upcoming season.

This will be the first ever head to head match between Marseille and Villarreal.

Olympique Marseille vs Villarreal: Prediction

Rudi Garcia did not change his team at all in between two seasons. He was unfortunate to lose the Europa League final (0-3 to Atletico Madrid) and finish the Ligue 1 campaign in fourth place to miss out on the Champions League football this season.

The Phocians do not have the quality to challenge the title, but the battle for the top-three finish will be their main challenge in the campaign to come.

Garcia can be excited for the form of his predator Kostas Mitroglou who bagged a brace in a 2-1 victory over Nantes on Wednesday.

The bad news is that Marseille conceded at least once in each of three pre-season friendlies even though the opposition included the names of Beziers, Saint-Etienne and Nantes.

His colleague on the other side, Javi Calleja, will certainly need some time to find the right chemistry between the new acquisitions.

Villarreal did look somewhat disorganized in a 1-1 draw to Hercules on Tuesday, which is why we’ll back Marseille to win here. The pick you’ll hardly make a mistake with is BTTS.
