Marseille vs Lyon
France – Ligue 1
Date: Sunday 12th May 2019
Kick off at 20:00 UK/ 21:00 CET
Venue: Stade Velodrome.
The problem for Marseille is that they will know if a European place will be possible for them before this game. If Saint Etienne win on Saturday there will be no European football for them. Still this is a game that the club would love to win for the fans and ruin Lyon’s chances at the same time of finishing in a Champions League position.
Marseille have been in decent form losing 1 game from their past four but they have gone their last two games without a win which has really hit their European chances. At home the club have won just 1 in their past 3 but overall have lost just 3 games this season at Stade Velodrome.
Lyon ultimately blew their chance of finishing 2nd last weekend when they could only draw 2-2 with Lille. They needed the win and they are now 6 points behind the club with 3 games to play. They have a bigger challenge though and that is to stay in 3rd place as Saint Etienne could take that and the final Champions League place that goes with it, they are just 1 point in front of the club and need to get something here.
Marseille vs Lyon: Head to Head
Lyon beat Marseille 4-2 earlier in the season.
Last season Lyon beat Marseille in this fixture 3-2.
Lyon have won the last 3 meetings between the teams.
Marseille have not beaten Lyon in the league since 2014 which goes back 10 games.
Marseille vs Lyon: Prediction
We think whatever happens in the Saint Etienne match on Saturday that Lyon can show good mental strength and get a win in this game. The club have some kind of psychological hold on Marseille and Marseille have shown very little this season to suggest that it is over.
We expect a few goals and a really great game of football. There are goals all over the pitch for both sides. This game isn’t about Lyon finishing 2nd but finishing 3rd in a battle with Saint Etienne that is set to go down to the very final game.
