Maribor vs Ludogorets
Europa League Qualification
Date: Thursday, 29 August 2019
Kick-Off at 19:15 UK / 20:15 CET
Venue: Ljudski vrt (Maribor).
Ludogorets have improved since crashing out of Champions League Qualifiers. The perennial Bulgarian Champs went on to beat Valur (5-1 on agg.) and TNS (9-0) to secure two-legged tie with Maribor in the Playoffs.
‘The Eagles’ were a much better side in their home-leg with 71% of the ball possession and 28 shots taken, but 10-men Maribor (since 57min) hang on for goal-less draw.
Maribor looked atrocious in Bulgaria, even before Dino Hotic got sent off. We haven’t seen a glimpse of the team that dismantled Valur (5-0 on agg.) and eliminated AIK on away goals rule.
They were outscored, but not outplayed vs Rosenborg, so their fans probably expected a positive performance in Razgrad. With aforementioned stats in mind, they should be thrilled with 0-0 draw. Return leg should be much more interesting.
Maribor vs Ludogorets: Head to Head
Last week’s game was their first competitive go at each other.
Their friendly match from 2017 failed to produce a winner as well (2-2).
Maribor vs Ludogorets: Prediction
I have reasons to believe we’re in for a different ball game.
Maribor is known for direct, attacking football, but Ludo imposed their game in the 1st leg and forced Slovenian side to defend. ‘The Violets’ won’t sit back at home, and we might see a goalfest if they concede an early goal. Maribor took 37 shots combined in their two home games against AIK and Rosenborg.
In takes two to tango and ‘The Eagles’ are ready to dance. With players like Keseru, Swierczok and Wanderson they stand a good chance of scoring, but I wouldn’t trust them to keep a clean sheet – Ludo tend to concede when they face teams from ex-Yugoslavia, especially on the road.
