Louis van Gaal says Manchester United were ‘lucky’ to get a winning goal against Everton to record a 2-1 victory in the FA Cup Semi-final on Saturday at Wembley.
Maurone Fellaini opened the scoring for United on 34 minutes before Chris Stalling’s own goal which gave Everton an equaliser and Anthony Martial killed the game on stoppage time for the Red Devils.
The heated game gave highs and lows dominance for both sides in each halves as David De Gea saved Romelu Lukaku’s early penalty.
Manchester United who were in search for their first FA Cup final since 2007 dream came true at last minute and Van Gaal thinks his side were fortunate to get the win.
“After it went 1-1, we showed our mental spirit, “he said.” It was unbelievable. We were in the game, out of the game, and then we were in the game.
“We are lucky that we scored in the last minute, but we deserved to win. Everton also created a lot of chances.”
Van Gaal also passed his judgement on man-of-the-match award winner Anthony Martial’s performance but believes the French lad has a lot to offer.
“I still see a lot of things I think he can improve and he will improve because only my training and playing you can improve.
“When you are playing on a higher level, you improve, and when you are older, you know things shall happen again and you have experience so you can make better decisions in the same situations.”
