Manchester United vs Chelsea Prediction & Match Preview

Manchester United vs Chelsea
England – FA Cup
Date: Sunday, 19 July 2020
Kick-off at 18:00 UK/ 19:00 CET
Venue: Wembley Stadium.

These two teams are locked in their race to qualify for Champions League at the moment, and it seems we could expect some key players to be rested for this fixture. Frankly, these squads prioritize a CL ticket more than FA Cup Glory – especially with the likes of Citizens still in play.

Still, we need to understand that there’s a huge rivalry between these teams, and even a friendly between them would be played fiercely.

Considering the h2h domination of Red Devils recently, and their absolute return to form, picks them out as the slight favorites. On top of that, the Blues have been going through some struggles lately.

However, Frank Lampard’s men still pose some serious offensive threat, and with some key personnel missing in the back, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men could be expected to concede.

As such, expect the overall better performance from Manchester United, but not a clean sheet though.

Manchester United vs Chelsea: Head-to-head (h2h)

  • The Devils are on a three-game winning run against this opponent.
  • They are unbeaten against this rival in the past two years.
  • Two of the preceding three match-ups had three or more goals.
  • The latest clash between the two had ended in a 0-2 win for Solskjaer’s men.

Manchester United vs Chelsea: Prediction

The Devils recorded a 1-2 win on the road against Norwich, in the Quarters. The guests had found the back of the net first. However, it was equalized by Todd Cantwell in the 70th minute.

The game extended to extra time, and it took a goal by Harry Maguire in the 118th minute, for his team to get a semi-final berth.

In the meantime, Lampard’s men registered a 0-1 win on the road against Leicester in the Quarters.

As things stand, Solskjaer’s men seem to be slightly ahead. They are unbeaten in their last 18 matches in a row, and had scored two or more goals in 11 of their previous 13 fixtures.

On top of that, they are also on a three-match winning run against this opponent, and have not lost a single game against them since 2018.

And to pile on, the Blues had lost two of their former five fixtures, and they had conceded two or more goals in three of the last five overall games.

As such, expect Manchester United to avoid a loss at the minimum.

However, this is a knockout game, and that too the semis. Any team has a puncher’s chance in here – especially Lampard’s men, who had won nine of the past eleven overall fixtures, and who had scored two or more goals in eight of their last twelve games.

Taking into account these observations, expect Chelsea to score at least once in the regular time.
