The 4-1 thrashing by Liverpool last weekend had pushed City down to third position from top of the league and had struggled to find the back of the net in recent weeks, even if they are a team which creates scoring chances in plenty.

Coming on the back of back-to-back defeats, the Citizens are still favorites to win on Saturday evening when they face a team who haven’t won at Ethihad in their last five visits.

Out of their six away games this season, four were draws and after holding the Liverpool to a draw and beating Chelsea, Ronald Koeman must be confident of pulling a surprise result this term.

Form Guide – Manchester City vs Southampton

Despite making a brilliant start to the campaign, City’s form has taken a steep decline in recent weeks. They have only managed to earn eight points from last five matches and their troubles mainly came from their poor showing in front of the goal.

In the last four matches they have only scored three goals, a considerable dip considering they have scored an astonishing 17 goals in the 4 matches prior to that. According to Opta stats, Manchester City have 164 shots on goal, more than any team in the top flight this season.

Southampton went on for 6 games undefeated prior to their 1-0 home defeat against Stoke last weekend. All of their three defeats this season has been at home and they are a team capable of strong showing on the road. The Saints also hold one of the best defensive records in away matches this season after conceding just 4 goals in 6 outings.

Head-to-Head – Manchester City vs Southampton

Manchester City has dominated Southampton in the recent outings. The sky blues have emerged clear winners in their last three meetings between the two. Southampton’s last win against the Citizens was a 3-1 win at home on February 2013.

While playing at home, City are on a five match winning streak against Southampton. The last Southampton win with Manchester City was in 2004 by a 3-1 scoreline.

Manchester City – Team News

Head Coach Manuel Pellegrini has to deal with a long line of injury list while picking his squad for Saturday’s clash. Samir Nasri, David Silva, Vincent Kompany and Wilfried Bony are injured while Eliaquim Mangala and Pablo Zabaleta are struggling for fitness and are expected to sit out for this match.

Joe Hart, who was forced off in midweek Champions League tie with a hamstring problem is deemed fit and will retain his place under the post.

Prediction

Manchester City need to buck up their ideas rather soon or they may find themselves chasing teams like Manchester United and Arsenal in the title challenge. The looks out of sorts against Juventus in the mid-week and a similar showing on Saturday won’t be any good for the home side.

Southampton take a lot of confidence from the away from this season and the results they achieved against the likes of Leicester City, Liverpool, and Cheslea in the recent will give them much needed self-confidence. Koemen and co. certainly think they have a good chance of stealing atleast a point against a rattled Manchester City and put and end to their losing streak at Etihad.
