After a season’s absence in Europe, Malmo set sights on Champions League group stage qualification. Their journey starts with a tight clash against Macedonian champions Vardar Skopje on Wednesday evening.
After qualifying for the group stage in the 2015/16 Champions League season, Malmo had a difficult domestic season. Their finished fifth in the 2015 Allsvenskan table and missed out on both Champions League for the following season. They raised their game in the 2016 season, clinching the Swedish title for a record 22nd time.
Malmo made another fine start to their Allsvenskan campaign this term and sit at the top of the table after 14 match days. They also picked up 10 wins and 3 draws during the period.
On the other hand, Vardar became Macedonian champions for the 10th time earlier this May. However, they are yet to make it into the group stages of any European competition. This is the fourth time in five seasons that they are entering the second stage of Champions League qualifiers. They failed to get past this stage in the previous three attempts.
Vardar warmed up for this tournament with three friendly games. But, the signs from those games are negative. They are coming on back-to-back defeats, first to Maribor and the most recent to a lower division German club Mattersburg.
