Luzern vs Sassuolo:
Europa League Qualifier.
Date: Thursday, 28-July-2016
Kick-Off: 18:45 UK
Venue: Swissporarena (Luzern)
FC Luzern search for the first ever appearance in Europa League group stages despite making into the qualifying rounds on three occasions in the last five seasons. Their best ever achievement in a UEFA competition is the quarter final appearance during the 1960/61 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. Luzern entered this season’s Europa League qualification round by finishing third in the 2015–16 Swiss Super League behind Basel and Young Boys.
The Swiss League for 2016/17 has started last week and Luzern had won their opening match against Lugano 2-1. They were involved in 7 friendly games prior to that, where they recorded 4 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses.
Sassuolo will be making their debut in a UEFA competition when they face Luzern at the Swissporarena on Thursday night. They finished 6th in the Italian Serie A last season which is a great achievement for a team who got promoted to the top tier three years ago.
The Serie A side had won in all of the 4 friendly matches they played in this pre-season so far, scoring 26 goals against 1 conceded. All these games were against very low profile teams, however this had helped to keep them in good shape going into their first competitive match of the new season.
Luzern vs Sassuolo: Head-to-Head Stats
This is again another Europa League qualification tie where two teams are meeting for the first time.
Luzern’s only meeting with an Italian side can be dated back to the quarter finals of 1960 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, where they lost both legs to Fiorentina which ended 9-2 on aggregate.
Luzern vs Sassuolo: Prediction
There is little to choose between these two sides on form and quality. Sassuolo would have been a better side on paper, but the loss of two key players Sime Vrsaljko and Matteo Politano to Atletico Madrid and Fiorentina could work out of their favour.
The Italians were busy in transfer market, strengthening their squad with more than 7 new players. And the same can be said about their Thursday’s host who made 8 new signings. It remained to be seen if the squads are settled as both managers wanted.
I expect a very open encounter on Thursday night and we may well witness a draw at the end of 90 minutes. I also believe goals will be on plenty, so over 2.5 goals is my recommended tip for this fixture.
Luzern vs Sassuolo: Tips
- Both Teams to score.
- Over 2.5 goals
