Senegal will be looking to clinch a confidence-boosting win over Luxembourg when these two sides take on each other on Thursday evening at Stade Josy Barthel. The success would raise the spirits inside the dressing room ahead of the World Cup in Russia. The Lions on Teranga are about to make their second appearance at the biggest stage in their history. Matching the previous success (quarterfinal at 2002 WC in Korea/Japan) will be a very challenging task, but not a mission impossible given they are to face the likes of Poland, Colombia and Japan in the group stage.
The head coach Aliou Cisse was part of the squad which went all the way to the quarterfinal 16 years ago. He has a decent depth all over the place in his ranks, Liverpool’s Sadio Mane obviously being the main star of the team. The man who scored a goal in the Champions League final on Saturday will likely skip this Luxembourg test, but we can still expect Cisse to line-up a strong squad here aiming to get the result ahead of friendlies with Croatia and Korea Republic.

Luxembourg had an interesting campaign in the WC Qualifications. They managed to shock France holding them to a goalless draw away from home and the head coach Luc Holtz generally has reasons to be satisfied with the fifth-place finish ahead of Belarus.
The hosts were on a streak of two wins and a draw in three matches before suffering a 0-4 disaster to Austria in March this year. It’s hard to expect them getting a result against Senegal whose players will be highly-motivated to fight for their place in the first XI at the World Cup in Russia.
