Liverpool vs Newcastle
English Premier League
Date: Wednesday, 26 December 2018
Kick-Off at 15:00 UK / 16:00 CET
Venue: Anfield (Liverpool).
It’s been a fantastic weekend for Liverpool who went four points clear off reigning champions Man City in the battle for the title. The Reds had no troubles easing past Wolves on Friday evening at Molineux as Mohamed Salah opened up the scoring 18 minutes into the game. Virgil van Dijk confirmed the victory halfway through the second half. As the Citizens shockingly fell 2.3 at home to Crystal Palace the day after, Liv’pool are now healthy four points adrift of Pep Guardiola’s men.
The hosts made it six straight wins in all competitions and they look to have found just the right rhythm heading into the festive period. Jurgen Klopp knows this period might be crucial for his men’s title ambitions and there are no doubts he will motivate his lads to keep pushing hard in the upcoming period. We might see some changes to Liv’pool’s starting line-up here given the team has two super complicated fixtures against the likes of Arsenal and Man City upcoming. Xerdan Shaqiri, who made the difference against Manchester United two weeks ago, was rested in the Wolves clash and we expect to see him in the starting line-up here.
Liverpool vs Newcastle: Head-to-head
Liverpool took four points from two H2H games with the Magpies in the previous term of Premier League (1-1 and 2-0).
They completely dominated this match-up in games at Anfield winning 48, drawing 16 and losing 11 of 75 home outings against Newcastle historically.
Five of past six H2H fixtures saw fewer than three goals scored.
Liverpool vs Newcastle: Prediction
Newcastle United moved on to 15th in the EPL standings after claiming four points from past two rounds. They kept back-to-back clean sheets against Huddersfield Town and Fulham, but Rafa Benitez might have expected more of his attacking line-up which notched just one goal in the process.
The Magpies generally have the second weakest attacking record in the entire league at the moment. They will be up against league’s by far best defensive line here which is why Liverpool’s clean sheet looks to be the best of betting options at 1.66 odds. The Reds allowed just two goals in eight home outings this term.
Since H2H record suggests we might be in for a low-scoring contest, we can hardly ignore the 1.72 odds offered for the Under 3.5 goals FT bet expecting Klopp to give some rest minutes to his attacking trio (Salah, Mane, Firmino).
