Lazio vs Inter Milan
2016/17 Italian Serie A.
Date: Sunday, 21 May 2017
Kick-Off: 19:45 UK,
Venue: Stadio Olimpico (Rome).
Lazio will seek to rebound from their Coppa Italia loss as they take on Inter at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday evening.
The Biancocelesti come into this game having lost to Juventus 2-0 in the Coppa Italia final. They will be naturally be very disappointed having failed to stop the Bianconeri from making it an unprecedented third straight title, but Simone Inzaghi’s men have been quite excellent this season, regardless. Lazio have booked their spot in the Europa League and have pretty much secured fourth spot, which means they will gain a place in the group stages.
They will certainly want to wrap up this great season with a home win. By contrast, as Lazio look forward to the Europa League, Inter appear to be doing everything they can to avoid playing in the competition. That’s because the Nerazzurri are not going to finish in fourth, or even fifth. Sixth place is the best they could achieve, and they certainly seem not to want to begin their season in July. They’ve fired Stefano Pioli after a loss to Genoa and come into this game having lost 2-1 to Sassuolo.
For all intents and purposes, Inter seem to have already written off this season, and have earned a dismal two points out of a possible 24 from their last eight games. They lost 2-1 to Crotone on the road and last picked up a point when they drew 2-2 with AC Milan in the Derby della Madonnina last month.
With Inter indifferent, Lazio will look to exploit the Nerazzurri’s bad form as they aim to give their fans something to cheer about. Atalanta are four points behind and not likely to catch the Biancocelesti, but Inzaghi’s side will want to recover from their Coppa Italia defeat by picking up all three points against an Inter side who are lacking in serious motivation at the moment.
Will both sides finish with all 11 men on the pitch? The last four matches between the two teams have seen an incredible five red cards dished out (three for Lazio and two for Inter), so it will be interesting to see if this match concludes with 22 players still out there.
