Latvia will close their set of June fixtures on Saturday when they take on Azerbaijan aiming to raise the spirits further ahead of the upcoming challenges in the UEFA Nations League in September. The Finnish manager Mika-Matti Paatelainen has reasons to be thrilled with his debut on the bench of the Latvian national outfit given that the Red-Whites clinched the trophy at the recently played Baltic Cup.
The Latvians took four points from matches against Estonia and Lithuania conceding just a single goal in the process. It’s a major improvement if we know they’ve earlier been on a horrendous thread of three losses and a draw in four games even though the opposition included the likes of Kosovo, Faroe Islands and Gibraltar.

Azerbaijan also played two matches in this “friendlies window” and they’ve had semi-success along the way. The first clash saw them destroy Asian rivals Kyrgyzstan 3-0 at home, but they failed to back it up falling with the same scoreline to Kazakhstan on Tuesday. The visitors are still trying to adjust to life without Robert Prosinecki on the bench as Qurban Qurbanov clearly has issues matching the Croat’s successes at the moment.
There is just no favourite in this type of matches and we simply have to try with the draw at 3.10 knowing that each of last three head to head encounters between the two rivals ended without a winner. Braver tipsters can try with the 1-1 correct score at 6.50.
